In response to the climate challenge, the Paris agreement highlights the commitment by all parties to limit the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to ensure that efforts are continued to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C, and recognises that States have common but differentiated responsibilities, depending on their respective capabilities and their different national circumstances. It also takes into account the level of development and the specific needs of particularly vulnerable countries, for example.
Beyond financial commitments, the Paris agreement signals the absolute need to redirect the global economy towards a low-carbon model.
The French presidency will last until the next COP which will take place in November 2016 in Morocco.
