Mr. Jack Lang visits Singapore (January 16-19)
Mr. Jack Lang, former Minister for Culture and for Education, and current President of the Institut du Monde Arabe, visited in Singapore from 16 to 19 January 2014 at the invitation of the National Heritage Board.
This official visit was a great opportunity for Mr. Jack Lang to meet the key persons from Singapore’s cultural institutions, among which, Mr. Lawrence Wong, Minister of Culture, Community and Youth, Ms. Rosa Daniel, CEO of the National Heritage Board and Dr. Alan Chong, director of the Asian Civilisation Museum, as well as to discuss avenues for cooperation on the exhibition “Les Arabes et la Mer” (The Arabs and the sea) by the Institut du Monde Arabe. Accompanied by Mr. Claude Mollard, his adviser at the Institut du Monde Arabe, Mr. Lang also visited the Asian Civilisation Museum, the Malay Heritage Centre, the National Museum, the Peranakan Museum, as well as the Singapore Biennale and Art Stage Singapore, which took place at the same time.
He gave a conference at the Asian Civilisation Museum on 17th January for the “NHB Distinguished Speaker Series” on“The Policy of Great Architectural Works of François Mitterand”. Throughout the conference he debated with the public on the challenges in the field of culture, both in Singapore and Asia, as well as in France.
Jack Lang also took part in a debate on 16 January at the French Lycée with students in their senior year on the theme “Human rights and democracy” and met with Ms. Kathy Lai, CEO of the National Art Council, and Dr. Tan Wee Kiat, CEO of Gardens by the Bay.
A lunch was held at the Residence of France in his honour on Thursday 16 January, with key players of the French cultural scene in Singapore.
