Two manatees from Singapore sent to Guadeloupe to help build population [fr]
On Sunday 7 August, two male manatees from Singapore have been flown to their new home, a large protected bay in Guadeloupe, a French overseas territory located in the Caribbean Sea. They will be part of a pioneering repopulation programme.
A farewell ceremony was organized at the River Safari in the presence of Mrs Laurence Beau, Deputy Head of Mission at the French Embassy, some representatives of Wildlife Reserves Singapore and the press.

They will be the first arrivals at the protected bay of Grand Cul-de-sac Marin, where the National Park of Guadeloupe is heading a repopulation project. The program aims to release the future offspring from the 15 manatees in the project into the wild.

The West Indian manatee species has been extinct in Guadeloupe’s waters since the early 20th century due to hunting.
