Visit by Professor Alain Labat, President of the Lyon-Singapore Association
On 4 February 2014, Professor Alain Labat received the Minister for Foreign Affairs (Foreigners) Award 2013 from Ms Grace Fu, Second Minister for Foreign Affairs in Singapore, during a dinner hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the presence of His Excellency Mr Benjamin Dubertret, Ambassador of France to Singapore. This award recognises the goodwill and the French-Singaporean linguistic cooperation.
Mr Alain Labat is a chinese professor, in charge of the inspection mission for chinese in several French academies, chief editor of the
"Planète chinois" journal and President of the Lyon-Singapore Association of the E. Herriott college in Lyon. In 1982, he initiated the first college exchange programme between students learning mandarin at the Herriott college in Lyon and students learning French at E. MOELC (Ministry of Education Language Center) in Singapore. This biannual programme of linguistic cooperation is the first and the oldest ever organised between France and an asian country. This promotion of culture and chinese language, and especially towards Singapore, was visionary thirty years ago.
This college exchange programme with MOELC currently continues with two French colleges; Magendie College in Bordeaux and La Fontaine College in Paris.
