IMDEX Asia 2013 - Asia Pacific's Flagship Maritime Defence Show, May 14th-16th 2013

The 9th edition of IMDEX Asia has been held at the Changi exhibition Centre, from 14 to 16 May 2013. Dedicated to maritime defence, this exhibition was launched by Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen, who declared that this biennial event is a key platform for defence professionals to exchange views and enhance co-operation in the maritime domain.

This year, a record number of 21 Navy chiefs in attendance was attained and the exhibition brought together 61 delegations from 48 countries and 194 exhibitors. Maritime defence representatives from the most innovative industries displayed their latest developments in the fields of maritime defence technologies. High-level conferences were organized to address strategic security and safety issues. A spectacular display of 15 warships from nine countries, including the French patrol vessel, L'Adroit, specially designed for maritime protection missions, was one of the highlights of the exhibition.

French and German diplomats challenge Singaporean Members of Parliament on the football pitch

Singapore, 9 May 2013

A team of French and German diplomats and businessmen faces a Singaporean team composed of Members of Parliament on the football pitch. The match is the first of this kind in the history of trilateral relations between France, Germany and Singapore. It takes place on Friday May 17 at Jalan Besar stadium, at 4:45 pm.

This friendly match, supported by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), the German Bundesliga, Lufthansa, EADS and Carlsberg, celebrates in a sportive way the strength of relations between France, Germany and Singapore. It is part of a series of events marking the 50th Anniversary of the famous “Elysée Treaty”. This Treaty marked a profound and historic change reconciliating France and Germany and also paved the way to European integration as a whole.

A key element of the Treaty is bringing the youth together, a value shared with the Singaporean Parliament and the Football Association of Singapore. The French-German team in this regard is proud to support CARE United, a community outreach programme for young players, established by FAS in 2004.

Olivier Assayas' "Something in the air" to be screened at the European Film Festival

"Something in the air" is about Paris in the early 70's. Gilles (Clément Métayer) a young high school student, is taken in by the political and creative turmoil of the times. Much like his friends, he is torn between his radical commitment and his personal ambitions. Through romantic encounters and artistic discoveries, Gilles and his friends' journeys take them to Italy and then London. Further down the line, they will have to make definitive choices in order to find their place in these turbulent times.

The 23rd edition of the European film festival themed this year as "Film is a universal language" offers 28 films from different European countries and will take place from 15 to 26 May 2013.

Singapore represented at Cannes Film Festival

One feature length film and seven Singapore short films will make their debut at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Jow Zhi Wei's short film "After the Winter (Au-delà de L'hiver)" is in the running for the Cinéfondation Prize. The 19-minute film is one of 18 shorts in the Cinéfondation Selection, picked from 1,550 submissions spanning some 277 schools around the world! Jow graduated from the Puttnam School of Fim at Lasalle and is presently completing his Masters programme at Le Fresnoy in France, a post-graduate art school and audio-visual research and production centre under a scholarship by the Institut français Singapour. "After the Winter" shows the plight of an aged couple living in a remote village in Taiwan.

Other Singapore short films to be screened at the Festival's Short Film Corner include "Cafe Je Vous Aime" (directed by Alistair Quak), "Cake" (directed by Benjamin Low), "Closer to Me" (directed by Ray Pang), "Silent Sins" (directed by Christina Choo), "Staring at the Sun" (directed by Tay Lide) and "El Gris Perfecto (The Perfect Grey)" (directed by Edwin Ho).

Anthony Chen, who is presenting a feature length film "Ilo Ilo" will be taking part in a section called the Director's Fortnight. Anthony Chen's "Ilo Ilo" explores the relationship between a Singapore family and their newly arrived maid, and set under the backdrop of the Asian financial crisis in 1997. Ilo Ilo is also the name of the province on Panay Island in the Philippines.

3rd Edition of "Working Together Forum"

On April 19, the French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore (FFCS) organized , with the support of the French Embassy, the 3rd Edition of the "Working Together Forum". Its goals are to reinforce business links between FCCS Small & Medium-sized Enterprises and large groups established in Singapore. A Reception at the French Residence was hosted by French Ambassador to Singapore, Mr Olivier Caron, at the end of the forum, with the signing of the FFCS Sustainability Charter.
